It’s late, and hardly the best time to be starting a blog based on rage at having our experiences as sex workers appropriated by a bunch of publicity seeking twunts who think having feels about sex workers and shouting them from the rooftop is an acceptable way to behave. I suppose after Sinead O’Connors whorephobic explosion this week they might just think its the way to become a successful musician. Get signed, release a single, come out with whorephobic slurs with against sex workers, cos after all we don’t listen to music on spotify or download it onto our i Players
THis Moment are a Los Angeles based band, who it seems think that know all there is to know about being a sex worker, and know just how terrible it is. They have released a song called Whore, seemingly unaware that this a slur aimed at sex workers and that sex workers are the only ones who can decide when it is, and isn’t appropriate to use the word. Yes, the word is sometimes put on non sex working women, but it is an insult only because being a sex worker is seen as an insult. It is used to say, hey, you are acting as badly/immorally as someone who sells sex for a living.
It gets worse than a misjudged title though, as this interview with the band shows.
“They are taking the power back, re: this word. “
They can’t, they are not whores, it is not their word to reclaim.
The message behind this song is taking back control. It is about taking the power from a disgusting and degrading word and turning it back around on the accuser.
There is nothing disgusting or degrading about being a whore, you judgemental, whorephobic ,dickwads!
The word ‘WHORE’ written down my back, and the dunce cap symbolize me placing myself on the stake for those who are suffering and I can only hope to encourage at least one person to find the self worth and love they deserve to transcend out of a painful situation into a beautiful one.
Just what the fuck…where to start with this. I assume the dunces cap is to suggest all those poor dumb whores who don’t know they are disgusting and degraded. Not quite sure how someone being photographed naked is equivalent as being martyred though. Unless of course you think being a whore is just the most disgusting and degrading thing ever, but who would think that? Oh, yeah…In this moment would!
Then of course there are her deep sad feelz about us poor whores, the painful situation without self worth or love that we exist in. How on earth did we ever survive until some third-rate pub band decided that they would help us transcend our pitiful experience.
This is a case when being a “Whore” is not a bad thing!
Hey guess what, we dont think it is, we think your song and your fee fees should go on a very short walk of a very high cliff. We don’t need you to reclaim our word, we are doing that ourselves, we don’t need you to make money of our backs, there is a not very nice word for people who do that.
